The Bread of This World; Praises III, Thomas McGrath, Midnight Paper Sales, 1992.

Two events broke the flat horizon of my North Dakota youth and implied the existence of other worlds: the building of an interstate overpass and the poetry of Thomas McGrath.

The Bread of This World is a hand-printed single poem book. McGrath’s poem celebrates the depth and color of life. The book itself is a tribute to both the poem and the poet. It is not shaped like a loaf of bread—or even a slice—but might, when held in your hands, feel an awful lot like bread and will, I hope, satisfy a certain hunger.

Printed on Mohawk Superfine paper with a color wood engraving by Gaylord Schanilec. The poem was set in 14 point Goudy Catalogue type. Japanese sewn into Arches covers.

8 x 10 inches. 18 pages. Price on publication: $38.
