STANDING ORDERS

GS printed his first book, Euphemisms from a Catholic Childhood, in 1980. The paper it was printed on had been fished out of the scrap bins of a paper company in Saint Paul, Minnesota, under the cover of darkness. Midnight Paper Sales was born.

Over the years GS came to realize that his standing order patrons made his survival as a fine press possible.

We hope you will consider becoming a Midnight Paper Sales standing order patron. As such you would agree to buy one copy of each title the press produces (including those in the Little Books Series) at a 25% discount. As a standing order patron, you are committed only to buy books and broadside sets published (or co-published) by Midnight Paper Sales. Standing orders also receive a 25% discount on all books in print. The same discount applies to prints and broadsides.

The following list illustrates the production of the press over the past several years, and the cost to standing order patrons:

2011 · The Bicycle Diaries, $225
2010 · Report from Pool Four, $90
2009 · Plunging, $105

3 Hungry Midnight (broadside set co-published with the Hungry Mind Bookstore), $150

Over this period GS also produced New York Revisited for the Grolier Club of New York in 2002, which most serious collectors of his work wished to buy, and which was offered to MPS standing orders patrons for $400 (a 20% discount) from the Grolier Club.

On occasion GS is commissioned to do engravings for trade publications. When he is, he generally tries to get enough copies of the book as his fee so that he can send them to standing order patrons as a gift.
These gifts have included:

  • Where One Voice Ends Another Begins: 150 Years of Minnesota Poetry, Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2007
  • Rooted: Seven Midwest Writers of Place, David Pichaske, University of Iowa Press, 2006
  • Fine Printing in the Twentieth Century, Selections from the Collection of Kenneth Auchincloss Exhibited at the Grolier Club, NY, The Grolier Club, 2005
  • A Walk by the River, Dale Jacobson, Red Dragonfly Press, 2004
  • The Boys’ House, Jim Heynen, Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2001
  • Rufus at the Door, Jon Hassler, Afton Historical Society Press, 2000
  • Keepsakes, Jon Hassler, Afton Historical Society Press, 1999

Standing orders patrons also receive a 25% discount on all books in print. The same discount applies to prints and broadsides.
